Determine website owner or affiliation

Need to do some investigating on a website to find out what other sites are connected or owned by that person/company?  Do you think your website(s) is completely anonymous?

The Give Away:  Google Analyticsanalytics

While Google Analytics is a great and useful tool for measuring traffic and other elements and factors, it is also a great tool to find website identities and affiliations.  Many of us know that an easy whois lookup can reveal to a website’s ownership information, however, sometimes, a website may be privately registered.  Though a website may be privately registered, it’s Google Analytics ID may lead to additional information such as other websites linked or owned by that web owner.

By copying a site’s Google Analytics tracker code found in the source of a webpage, and pasting it into www.ewhois.com, one may pull up a list of sites sharing the same analytics ID.  The sites that appear are likely to be owned or affiliated with the domain in question.

Locate Google Analytics ID and do a reverse lookup to find other affiliated websites. One of those websites may not be privately registered and can lead you to the owner.

Security

If your website shares the same analytics ID with other sites which you are trying to remain anonymous, you may want to use separate ID’s for added security.
