Increase your Alexa Rankings

Alexa is a rank information site/toolbar owned by Amazon measured by the amount of users that have visited a site with the toolbar installed. (Google, Yahoo, and others use a similar concept with their toolbars).  Traffic rank is based on data provided by users in Alexa’s global data panel (through unique visitors and page views) over a rolling 3 month period and ranks are updated daily.  The site with the highest combination of uniques and page views is ranked highest.

Why increase your Alexa rank?

While many SEO specialists do not care about Alexa rank, Ad networks refer to your Alexa rank to determine the worth of a link on your site. The higher the reach and traffic, the higher the worth. Alexa is not 100% accurate as it mainly takes information from users using the toolbar, but many still refer to it’s reports to get an idea of how a site is doing.

Accuracy

There are limits to statistics based on the data available. Sites with relatively low measured traffic will not be accurately ranked by Alexa. For low traffic sites, there is not enough enough data received from sources to make rankings beyond 100,000 statistically meaningful.  However, the closer a site gets to #1, the more reliable its rank.

Here are some tips on increasing Alexa Ranking. These have been collected from several articles and I cannot guarantee its accuracy. Experiment at your own risk.

Install the Alexa Toolbar or Firefox SearchStatus

Install these toolbars and set the site that you would like to increase as your homepage.  Visiting your site frequently ads visits to your results.

Have your company, friends, and family install the toolbar and visit your site or ask to make it their homepage.

If that’s too much for them, have them click on your Alexa Rank Widget

Write unique content and write it regularly

Writing unique content and creating an audience provides a consistent means of creating real, legitimate, and valuable traffic. Focus on high volume keywords, keep content relevant, share on social media and develop a permanent strategy for getting traffic. Legitimacy over manipulation is the best way to go.

Alexa Rank Widget

Post an Alexa Rank Widget on your site.  Each click to counts as a visit even when the toolbar is not installed.  Post Widgets on heavily visited pages or on your pages with a high Google Page rank.

Post your link in forums and high quality, high traffic websites

Posting your link to forums and other blogs along with posting your comments and feedback; get some help by hiring someone to post for you.

Link exchanges or purchasing banners/links on high traffic sites help bring in additional traffic.

Use Pay/Click Campaigns

Campaigns to bring in traffic. The more traffic, the more likely you are to have people using the toolbar or click on your widgets

Other ideas

Alexa Auto-Surfs
While more manipulated, using services like Alexa Auto-Surfs can improve your ranking, although will only last for as long as you are paying them.

Pay cybercafes to install the toolbar
The more computers loading your site will add visits to your results.  If a cyber cafe loaded your sites all day, this could help bring in more visits to your results.
